2012 St Mary's School Extreme Teams Challenge

September 2012

Client and venue: St. Mary's School, Shaftesbury, Dorset

Client requirement: Back for a second year St. Mary's were looking to build on the success of the 2011 St Mary's Extreme Teams Challenge.  The aim again was to have a number of activities for the Upper IV (year 9) students who were starting the new autumn term. Many of the girls were returning from the previous term and, as in the previous year, there would be a large intake of girls joining the school for the first time. The activities were to be inclusive and encourage the girls to get to know and work with each other. The request was to deliver similar challenges so comparisons could be made against the previous year group.

Solution: Designed and delivered 5 team adventures, to be undertaken within 24 hours, for the entire year group. Each adventure provided the opportunity for a new team leader and would test core life skills such a time management, communication, planning, problem solving and team work. A variety of adventures were designed to challenge the girls cognitively, cerebrally and physically in a fun and engaging way.

St Mary's had a school wide initative looking at the qualities and skills of athletes in the run up to the 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games in London. Extreme Teams invited local elite athlete and Mountain Biking Orienteering World Championship silver medalist Emily Benham to speak to the girls about her experiences and challenges in elite world sport. Emily gave a fantatsic and engaging talk where the time for the Q&A had to be extended as there were some many questions from the girls who attended.
